The Weimaraner is a dog that needs plenty of exercise and a place to run. Try to avoid running them after a meal as they may develop a life threatening bloat. This breed of dog will do better with three smaller meals a day rather then two or even one large meal. This is a very protective dog and can be a one person or one family dog. They may not be trusted with other pets due to their strong prey instinct. They may fight other canines. They need to be socialized with children and very young children are in danger of being knocked over but this athletic, highly active dog. They have a coat that is very pleasing to the touch. As a reminder, never leave a child unsupervised with a puppy or dog.
Special Health Considerations
Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Weimaraner is no exception. Be on the look out for bleeding disorders, gastric tension and Canine Hip Dysplasia (genetic based looseness in the hip joint that can lead to arthritis pain and lameness). She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.
Grooming
The Weimaraner has an easy care sleek, short and smooth coat that feels like heaven to the touch. She should be brushed regularly and rubbed down with a chamois to make her coat shine. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat, help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with her.
Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.
Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet.
Life Span
The Weimaraner can live between 10 and 12 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.
History
The Weimaraner comes from Germany where they were used to hunt big game. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1943.

I just would like to say that Weimaraners make great pets… they are very trust worthy with small animals. Our pup we got at 8 months old. I breed kittens and he would never hurt them. We have small birds wandering around everywhere – including chikens and also parrots… and he has never hurt them. He has also never hurt our little dog or even our rabbits. He is huge and very playful… but I totally trust him. We have young small children here as well and although they can be intimidated by him, he has always been very gentle towards them. This is a young pup with no training and no experiance with animals.. who came to live with us at 8 months old and he was perfect. Easy to train and everything. I think their could be some Weims that are not so trust worthy, but i know personally that some are.
